Platinum Partner Crowe Horwath - Do you have Australian Investments?

As you may be aware New Zealand has entered into an Automatic Exchange of Information Agreement with approximately 100 other countries, including Australia.  This results in information being shared by “financial institutions” with the relevant tax authorities.  The first round of information is being shared later this year.

If you have investments in Australia (other than listed shares) you may have Australian tax obligations. If you have not been dealing with these, it is likely that the Inland Revenue Department and Australian Taxation Office (ATO) will become aware of this through the information exchange. This may result in assessments being raised and penalties being imposed.

Crowe Horwath has tax specialists in Australia who can assist you with identifying and/or meeting any obligations you may have, before the ATO come calling. By being proactive around any tax obligations, penalties can often be mitigated.

If you have investments (other than listed share investments) in Australia (or other countries) and you wish to understand if you have tax obligations in that jurisdiction, contact one of our New Zealand tax specialists. They will be able to assist you and connect you with a tax specialist in Australia (or elsewhere).

With 25 offices across New Zealand and over 600 staff (with over 100 of those being tax people), there is someone in your region that can help you.

For assistance, contact your local Crowe Horwath office.

Platinum Partner - Gibson Sheat - Spotlight on Immigration

Many of you may not be aware that Gibson Sheat has a specialist immigration practice.

We help migrants who are looking to enter New Zealand under the highly skilled, entrepreneur, or investor immigration categories. But we can also assist New Zealand businesses who are needing to recruit skilled employees.

Accredited Employer Scheme

Immigration New Zealand’s Accredited Employer Scheme is a simplified process which permits employers to hire limited numbers of foreign employees for skilled and specialist roles. A big advantage of the scheme is that an Accredited Employer wishing to employ a foreign employee does not have to meet the Labour Market Test. This means that they do not have to prove there are no New Zealanders available for the work.

The scheme and its advantages have been in the news recently, and some reservations have been expressed that it makes it too easy to employ foreign employees.

It would be a mistake to assume that the scheme will continue indefinitely in its present form, and the government is reported to be contemplating a review to ensure the scheme remains appropriate.

We suggest that employers who may wish to avail themselves of the benefits of becoming an Accredited Employer should move promptly to apply for accreditation. Our Immigration Team is available to provide further information and assist with preparing and lodging applications for accreditation.

Act quickly to become an accredited employer and hire skilled foreign specialists

Platinum Partner - Link Business - Be Proactive, Not Reactive When Selling Your Business

I was recently watching a blog by a well-known phycologist who does a great deal of work with corporate organisations in the area of business relationships and business development. There was a terrific quote that stood out for me which is highly applicable to business owners in regard to the sale of their businesses. The phycologist said:

“There is little incentive to change when things are going well, but there is less creativity for change when things are bad.”

This is extremely relevant with regard to preparing your business for sale. We frequently deal with business owners who come to us after an unforeseen event has created the need to sell. Little preparation has been done in advance of the sale and the seller is not in the best position to demonstrate a strong value proposition. Preparing in advance, without the stress of needing to sell, provides creative space for a comprehensive presentation of the business and a clear value proposition to attract the best price.

A business that is well prepared for sale will place the vendor in a stronger position going into a negotiation. Anticipating what a buyer will be looking for (good and bad) in advance of going to market will provide the seller with an opportunity to remove or mitigate the obstacles, and direct the buyer’s focus toward the opportunities. Preparation is not just about presentation, it’s also about having a confident frame of mind. The ability to access critical information rapidly, answer all questions comfortably and steer the conversation toward the future opportunities for the business will maintain the buyer’s confidence and enthusiasm. These are key ingredients for extracting the best price from your buyer.

Gold Partner GoFi8ure - Do you have a strategy for your business?

When it comes to Business Strategy there are two rules:

Rule #1: Have a strategy.
Rule #2: Make sure everyone is literally on the same page in understanding the components of the strategy, and how to implement it.

All too often strategies contain words or concepts that take on as many meanings and interpretations as the number of people who read them. Having a clear and focused strategy is critically important to the success of your business. Without a well-defined strategy, your business may stall - or even fail.

You need to have a plan for day-to-day business, and you also need to spend time looking at and listening to the changes that are happening in your industry. To ensure you make progress towards your long-term goals, it is a matter of having a daily plan to get things done, in conjunction with an overarching strategy to guide those daily plans.

Success is about planning; click here to read more about the importance of strategy in your business.

Silver Partner Mobilize Mail - Where to spend your advertising budget in 2018

Advertising is one discipline, businesses regardless of their size are always looking for improved ROI. Therefore hunting down and trying new strategies for a higher rate of conversion is the overriding focus of many marketers and business owners; and in this blog article we summarise (from this article “Advertising That Works in 2018”), where you can spend your advertising dollars in 2018.

Focussed on local & fixing problems

Advertising’s guiding principles have predominately been to satisfy curiosity, fix things, and focus on local i.e. target customers within the surrounds of the business’s location. Advertising was also more about the product or service, not the audience, however everything’s changed in advertising and quite dramatically too. We now have the Internet, smartphones and social media.

Targeted Advertising

What worked for all businesses including bricks and mortar operators a few years ago using offline print advertising, that was seen by a small albeit generic audience no longer offers the ROI businesses owners need to compete and grow.

Advertising in 2018 is mostly online aka digital marketing and while it’s reach is broader and without the confines geographically, it’s actually more targeted thanks to data capture. Even with data protection laws, there’s still greater success with online or inbound marketing than outbound or offline and Google Ads is leading the charge. Then there’s social media marketing and content marketing, arguably the most effective for ROI.

Getting Found Online Is Still A Challenge

All businesses understand the power of organic search and getting found online and there’s no better performer for achieving this for a business than ‘content marketing’.

For ROI and SEO content marketing leads the charge, ahead of other strategies like online banners. It’s a huge market globally and it’s in full swing not that you’d know it here in New Zealand where it’s businesses are just starting to appreciate it’s value albeit many months after their peers in the UK, USA, Australia.

Geographically speaking, New Zealand is far away from it’s western neighbours and while the Internet brings the world closer to us, it’s as if the geographic distant has played a role in our laggard interest in new marketing strategies like content marketing. It’s taken a long time for this effective strategy to be become a major component of the marketing and advertising mix however as the saying goes: Better late than never!

Mix It Up - Online & Offline

Just like with investments where we’re told to have a ‘balanced portfolio’ and not all our eggs in one basket, arguably the same can be said for where you spend your advertising dollar. There is a place for offline print advertising with stands and banners at trade shows, plus promotional collateral including corporate branded gifts, and giveaways so it’s not a one size fits all in 2018 businesses need to spend more on online strategies now but also mix it up in some of the traditional channels like TV, Radio and print media.

Bronze Partner Woburn International - How to deal with a difficult situation - how are you managing this?

Representing:
Airinc - International Remuneration Consultants
Due to this countries skill shortages we need migrants to fill the gaps for the work needed but also to up-skill our workforce and we are competing with other countries.

With the employment and visas granted Employers take on a huge responsibility in working with migrants and helping them assimilate. It is challenging for the employer, the migrant and the family, and there is a need for flexibility by all concerned.

Many employers can experience challenges in having a migrant in their work force because they need them, but what happens when the migrant steps out of line?

How to deal with a difficult situation - how are you managing this?

Is the migrant aware of your company policies in relation to drug testing, use of internet, company cars, usage of company phones, equal opportunities, harassment, dealing with company property?  Migrants need to understand their employment agreement and polices of the company.   Ensuring the migrant understands these companies’ policies can save a lot of problems later on.

If the problem is unsurmountable and you terminate the employment, Immigration NZ need to know this, in order to prevent the migrant working illegally for someone else and also protects other employers where the migrant is likely to end up.

Woburn International can assist you will cultural integration, visas and reviewing your work place policies in line with Immigration NZ’s Labour Inspectorate requirements.

Bronze Partner Red Hot Business - A Surprise Way to Get Better Staff Performance

The surprise solution to getting better staff performance is staggeringly simple - tell them what you want.

I know this sounds simple, yet, it’s something that the vast majority of business owners we encounter either aren’t doing - or, by their own admission, aren’t doing well. If you’ve ever said, “Why don’t they just use initiative?” or “It’s just common sense” you may be guilty too.

Consider this:
You have been working in your business /profession for 10-20 years. How long has your employee?

You’ve developed a productive working routine over years of need. How long has your employee?

You have a sense of drive that has meant your business survived start up and is still here many years later. Has your employee done that?

The answers to these questions should begin to make it clear that your employees are not all like you.  Continuing to assume they are like you (and that they will do what you would do) is asking for continued headaches.

Instead, outline what you want - and do this by writing something down first.

This might be a checklist of pre-departure checks (if your team do off-site work) to prevent wasted trips back to your premises.

It might be a simple Quality Checking sheet, outlining the key areas you want them to self-verify before ‘completing’ a job.

Maybe it’s just a clear list of tasks they need to complete each day of the work week.

Whatever it is, start with accepting that maybe the first place to look is at yourself - and begin re-setting expectations.

We’ve been helping Wellington business owners get more from their people as part of our coaching process for 14 years (resulting in more profits and less stress for our clients). If you want to learn some more about what you can do to get better results out of the people that work for you, check out the information on our blog at www.redhot.co.nz

MathildaRocks Consulting - Dinner parties and your accounts

Imagine you hosted a dinner party last weekend. How do you know if it went well?

Maybe everyone you invited turned up. Maybe there was lots of chatting and laughing. Maybe nobody spilt red wine on your cream carpet.

Your gut feel is that the party went well.

Can you use your gut feel to tell if your business is going well? To an extent, yes you can. But, to REALLY know, you’re going to have to look at your accounts.

Your accounts can tell you a lot about how your business is performing, but your financial statements can only tell you WHAT happened, it’s all historical information: it has happened, there is no going back.

To delve further into your business and uncover WHY it happened, HOW it happened and what the FUTURE may look like, you need more in depth analysis and you need management accounting.

Management accounting complements the compliance aspects of financial accounting to give your business a whole picture view of its performance. It is accounting to help you manage.

RiverLink geotechnical works gets underway in August 2018

Next month, the RiverLink team will start investigations to better understand the geotechnical complexities of the Hutt Valley. This work will inform the design of the new stopbanks, a large retaining wall which will support the promenade, piers and abutments for the pedestrian cycle bridge and help us understand the costs for building a highway interchange and new Melling bridge. We also expect the findings to help us understand how a nearby major fault line could impact our designs and how best to protect the aquifer beneath the surface.

From August to October 2018 you can expect to see all manner of machinery both in and around the river. We’ll use excavators, drill rigs and other geophysics equipment - all in accordance with resource consent conditions. This work will take place on both sides of the river from just upstream of Melling Bridge to the Ewen Bridge. The enclosed map shows where the work will be done.

At some locations, there will at times be limited access to the river. There will be traffic management in place along Daly Street and the Melling railway station carpark while work is done at these locations. More details about what to expect will be available closer to the time.

About RiverLink

Since 2014, the Transport Agency, HCC and Greater Wellington Regional Council (GWRC) have worked collaboratively on a RiverLink programme which involves three separate but interdependent projects - flood protection improvements, the Making Places urban development plan and the Melling transport improvements.

The RiverLink programme seeks to identify a coordinated investment programme to improve flood protection along the Hutt River, provide better urban amenity connections between the Hutt city centre and the Hutt River and improve the transport connections at Melling. You can learn more about RiverLink and sign up to our newsletter at our website: www.RiverLink.co.nz.

If you want to know more about the upcoming geotechnical work, please contact Lucy Ashford, Stantec, Engineering Geologist, (027) 562 7228, lucy.ashford@stantec.com or Genevieve Drake, Communications Advisor, (021) 676 425, RiverLink@gw.govt.nz.

Taka Trust Gold Tournament - Golf fundraiser helps address inequality for Lower Hutt kids

An annual charity golf tournament which has helped fund more than 25,000 life-changing opportunities and experiences for hundreds of Lower Hutt children in the past two years is seeking further sponsorship and support.

Te Awa Kairangi Access (TAKA) Trust aims to address inequality by providing young people with access to recreation, arts, events, literacy and other opportunities to enhance their learning and achievement.

The Naylor Love Hutt City Charity Golf Tournament is the TAKA Trust’s major annual fundraiser. Proceeds from the 2016 and 2017 tournaments enabled the Trust to provide 25,000 experiences including providing free buses for trips to Te Papa, Parliament and Hurricanes’ games at the Westpac Stadium, to name a few. Many of these experiences were firsts for the children and their families.

The current vision is the TAKA WIFI project, which aims to provide digital devices and community wifi to children and their families from Lower Hutt’s north eastern suburbs.

How you can help
You can support the work of the TAKA Trust by supporting the golf tournament, which will be held at Shandon Golf Club on 30 November 2018. You can play golf and/or you can offer donations or sponsorship. Funds are raised through tournament entry fees, sponsorships and donations. We also seek raffle prizes, food and drink and quality prizes for the charity auction.

TAKA Trust has been established with support from Hutt City Council, community leaders and partners:  KPMG, Datacom, Network for Learning, RIDE Holidays, Tranzit NZ, Hutt Mana Energy Trust, Orchestra Wellington, Hurricanes, Phoenix and private donors.

Extrinsic

So, what do we mean by “Intelligence”?

The Shorter Oxford Dictionary gives the following definitions (among others): “knowledge of value”; “superiority of understanding”; and “situational insight”.

To those nouns, we can add “intelligence” as a verb, meaning “A formal approach to the acquisition of pertinent knowledge”.

That definition starts with an acknowledgement that something is unknown, that would be beneficial to know.

Information is factual.  It is numbers, statistics, and various odd bits of data regarding people, places, things, events, concepts and time, that may be of interest for one reason or another.  Information often appears to be telling you something, but often, it is not.

Information often appears to be related to “now”.  In reality, it almost certainly will be historic, without reference to a definitive time and space.

Therefore it is practically impossible to make optimum decisions based purely on historic information, no matter how accurate or comprehensive that information appears to be.

That does not stop us trying, however.  It is part of the human survival mechanism to search for order, and to make sense of whatever information we are presented with.  In many cases, we rely on memory and experience to avoid potential threats, and trust on instinct to guide our actions to give the most apparent benefit.

However, the future is uncertain.  Should we go forward using history as a guide - or should we be open to future-focused risk and opportunity identification, and be prepared to proactively manage threats and opportunities as they morph across time?

Tertiary Education Commission

The Tertiary Education Commission is running a nationwide project to look at how institutes of technology and polytechs (ITPs) can be more sustainable and agile, and meet the needs of a rapidly-changing economy. As part of this we are talking to staff, students, employers and the community (find out more about the project here).

We are also inviting employers to complete an online survey on their experience of hiring people who have studied at an ITP.  We expect the survey will be live by the end of this week.  The survey only takes five minutes and will be open until 24 August.  Themes emerging from the feedback will inform the advice the TEC provides to the Minister of Education later this year.
